Chennai to Bangalore Cab: Best Routes, Fares & Travel Tips
The ultimate guide for IT professionals and weekend travellers
Chennai to Bangalore by Cab: The Complete Booking Guide
The Chennai–Bangalore stretch is one of the most commercially important and heavily traveled road corridors in South India. Business travelers use it weekly. Families take it for long weekends. Students use it at the start and end of every semester.
At 340–360 km depending on the route, it takes roughly 5.5 to 7 hours. That's long enough to warrant some proper planning.
Two Main Routes: NH-44 vs NH-48
Route 1: NH-44 (via Ambur and Krishnagiri) — Recommended Distance: ~340 km | Typical time: 5.5–6.5 hours
This is the more direct, better-maintained route. Chennai → Ambur → Krishnagiri → Hosur → Electronic City → Bangalore.
Pros: - Shorter distance - Better road quality on most stretches - Hosur industrial area is the last major stop before Bangalore
Cons: - Hosur to Electronic City (Bangalore outskirts) has heavy truck traffic - ORR (Outer Ring Road) entry into Bangalore can be slow at peak hours
Route 2: NH-48 (via Vellore and Krishnagiri) Distance: ~360 km | Typical time: 6–7 hours
This route goes Chennai → Vellore → Krishnagiri → Hosur → Bangalore.
Pros: - Slightly more scenic stretches - Can be useful if you're starting from Chennai's western side (Poonamallee, Tambaram)
Cons: - Slightly longer - Some sections through Vellore town can be slow
For most travelers starting from central or southern Chennai, NH-44 is the better call.

Best Departure Times
This is the single most important variable in your journey. Same route, same distance — but departure time can mean the difference between 5.5 hours and 8 hours.
Early Morning Departure (4:00 – 6:00 AM) ⭐ Best You leave Chennai before the city wakes up. Roads are clear through Ambur, Krishnagiri, and Hosur. You arrive in Bangalore before the ORR gets chaotic. This is particularly powerful for business travelers who need to be in Koramangala or Whitefield for a 10 AM meeting.
Mid-Morning (9:00 – 11:00 AM) — Good Chennai city traffic has cleared. Travel is comfortable. Expect some slowing near Hosur and Electronic City.
Afternoon (12:00 – 3:00 PM) — Manageable Road conditions are reasonable. Avoid leaving Chennai at 1–2 PM if you plan to arrive during Bangalore's peak hours (6–9 PM on the ORR).
Evening Departure (4:00 – 7:00 PM) — Difficult You leave Chennai in rush hour and arrive in Bangalore in rush hour. The ORR and Hosur Road combination during this window is notoriously slow. Unless unavoidable, choose any other slot.
Where to Stop Along the Way
Ambur (2 hours from Chennai) Famous for Ambur Biryani — one of the most celebrated biryanis in Tamil Nadu. The route passes through Ambur town, and there are several well-known biryani restaurants along the highway. Recommended for a 20-minute meal break.
Krishnagiri (3.5 hours from Chennai) A fruit-buying stop for many travelers. The highway area is lined with mango and guava sellers. Good petrol stations and restrooms too.
Hosur (4 hours from Chennai) The last major town before entering Karnataka. Fuel up here if needed. Several decent restaurants including filter coffee shops that will revive the most tired traveler.
The ORR Question: Entering Bangalore
Bangalore's Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the NH-44 intersection near Electronic City is where most delays happen. A few tips:
- Electronic City flyover: Don't dread it. The flyover itself moves well — the slowdown is at the toll plaza below.
- Silk Board junction: Notorious for being one of Bangalore's worst bottlenecks. If you're heading to Koramangala, HSR Layout, or BTM, brace for this.
- Sarjapur Road / Bellandur: Another known congestion zone. Early morning arrivals sidestep this entirely.
Ask your driver about the preferred entry route for your specific Bangalore destination — drivers who do this route regularly know the shortcuts.
One-Way vs Round Trip: Which to Book?
Book one-way if: - You're staying in Bangalore for an extended period (5+ days) - You'll return by air or train - Your plans might change
Book round trip if: - It's a weekend trip (Friday evening to Sunday evening is a very common pattern) - You want the same driver both ways — more convenient and no re-booking - You want to lock in the return date at today's price
