Chennai to Madurai by Cab: The Temple Tour Guide
Madurai is not just a city. It's one of the oldest living cities in the world — continuously inhabited for over 2,500 years. At its center stands the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a 14-tower gopuram complex so extraordinary that first-time visitors often just stand and stare.
Getting from Chennai to Madurai is a journey of 450–460 km. By cab, that's roughly 7–8 hours. This guide helps you plan every part of it.

The Route: Chennai to Madurai
Main Route via NH-38: Chennai → Villupuram → Trichy → Madurai Distance: ~450 km | Time: 7 – 8.5 hours
This is the primary route, passing through some of Tamil Nadu's most important towns. The road quality is generally good, with four-lane highway for most of the journey.
Alternative via NH-32/NH-45C: Chennai → Tindivanam → Puducherry → Cuddalore → Chidambaram → Kumbakonam → Thanjavur → Madurai A longer but historically rich route (650+ km) for those wanting to combine temple visits en route.
Key Stops on the Main Route
Villupuram (200 km): State highway junction city. Good restroom and meal stop. Many travelers continue to Puducherry and then south — but for the direct Madurai route, continue on NH-38.
Trichy/Tiruchirappalli (310 km): About 5 hours from Chennai. The natural midpoint and an ideal lunch stop. Trichy itself has exceptional temples — the Rock Fort Temple and Srirangam are 30–45 minutes worth of exploration if you have time. The Saravana Bhavan on the NH bypass serves reliable vegetarian food.
Dindigul (390 km): Famous for lock manufacturing and a particular type of biryani. Worth a short stop for the biryani. About 1.5 hours from Madurai.
