Chennai to Pondicherry by Cab: The Weekend Road Trip Guide
Ask any Chennaiite where they go for a long weekend and nine times out of ten, the answer is Pondicherry. And it makes perfect sense. It's close enough for a Saturday morning departure, different enough to feel like a real getaway, and the drive itself — especially via the East Coast Road — is one of the most pleasant in Tamil Nadu.
If you're planning this trip, here's everything you need to know.

The Two Routes: ECR vs NH-32
East Coast Road (ECR) — Scenic, Recommended for First-Timers Distance: ~165 km | Time: 3 – 3.5 hours (excluding stops)
The ECR route runs along the Bay of Bengal — literally. You'll pass resorts, beach shanties, fishing villages, and open sea for much of the drive. The Kovalam-Mahabalipuram stretch is particularly scenic.
Stops worth making: - Mahabalipuram (60 km from Chennai): Shore Temple, the Rathas, sculpture workshops. Worth 1–2 hours if you haven't been. - Covelong / Kovalam: Beach resort belt. Good for a quick coconut water break. - Auroville junction: Just before Pondicherry. The experimental township of Auroville is worth a short detour.
Note: ECR is a scenic two-lane road for stretches, and weekend traffic can slow things down. Start early.
NH-32 (via Grand Southern Trunk Road) — Faster, Less Scenic Distance: ~155 km | Time: 2.5 – 3 hours
Goes Chennai → Tindivanam → Pondicherry. Mostly four-lane highway. Faster, particularly on weekday mornings. Less interesting scenery.
Best for: Travelers who prioritize time over experience, or those returning on a Sunday when ECR traffic can back up.
Cab Fares from Chennai to Pondicherry

| Tempo Traveller (12-seat) | ₹6,000 – ₹7,500 | ₹10,000 – ₹12,500 |
Toll charges are approximately ₹200–₹280 one way (ECR has tolls at Kovalam, Mahabalipuram, and Tindivanam).
When to Leave Chennai
For a Saturday–Sunday trip: - Leave Chennai between 6:00 and 8:00 AM Saturday - Arrive in Pondicherry by 9:30 – 11:00 AM - Full day to explore; dinner by the beach; sleep in a comfortable guesthouse - Sunday: morning cafe, White Town stroll, lunch; depart 2:00 – 3:00 PM to avoid Sunday evening return traffic
Avoid leaving Pondicherry after 5 PM on Sunday. ECR return traffic from Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram can make this a 4+ hour journey back to Chennai.
What to Do in Pondicherry: A 2-Day Plan
Day 1
Morning: - Arrive, check into hotel or guesthouse (White Town has charming heritage properties) - Walk the French Quarter — rue Suffren, rue Dumas, rue Romain Rolland - Visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram (dress conservatively; no photography inside)
Afternoon: - Lunch at a White Town café (La Maison Rose, Café des Arts, Villa Shanti) - Rock Beach promenade walk (shaded in the afternoon) - Pondicherry Museum for a quick history fix
Evening: - Sunrise-facing Rock Beach is stunning at dusk (paradoxically) - Dinner at a beachside restaurant; fresh seafood is excellent here
Day 2
Morning: - Catch sunrise at Rock Beach (genuinely beautiful, worth the early alarm) - Explore the Tamil Quarter and Immaculate Conception Cathedral - Auroville (15 km from Pondicherry): book Matrimandir access in advance online; the meditation hall is unique
Before Returning: - Pondicherry Brewery or a café lunch at Le Café (the government-run one by the sea is reliably good) - Buy Pondicherry specialties: handmade paper, incense, jasmine products, and wine from Serenity Beach area shops
Places Nearby Worth Adding
- Auroville: 15 km north of Pondicherry. A planned international township centered on sustainable living and meditation. The Matrimandir requires advance online registration.
- Serenity Beach: 8 km from White Town center. Quieter, less touristy. Good for surfing (beginner-friendly schools operate here).
- Paradise Beach: Accessible by boat from Chunnambar Boat House. ₹50 per person one-way. Beautiful and uncrowded on weekday visits.
Traveling in a Group?
Groups of 6–10 people should consider a Tempo Traveller. You travel together, split costs significantly (the per-person cab fare for a group of 10 in a Tempo Traveller is less than a train ticket), and stay together for the entire trip. No coordinating multiple Olas.
