Chennai to Thiruvannamalai: The Girivalam Guide
Girivalam — the sacred circumambulation of Arunachala Hill in Thiruvannamalai — is one of the most spiritually powerful experiences available in Tamil Nadu. Every full moon night, hundreds of thousands of devotees walk the 14 km path around the base of the hill, chanting, carrying lamps, and pausing at eight lingam shrines along the way.
It is also, practically speaking, one of the largest spontaneous human gatherings in the world on a monthly basis.
If you want to experience this, you need to plan carefully. And the journey from Chennai starts with your cab.

The Route: Chennai to Thiruvannamalai
Distance: ~185 km | Time: 3 – 3.5 hours
Chennai → Tindivanam → Viluppuram → Thiruvannamalai (via NH-232)
The road is good for most of the journey, narrowing near Viluppuram and becoming a two-lane highway for the last 60 km. Thiruvannamalai town is compact and walkable once you arrive.
Cab fare from Chennai to Thiruvannamalai: - Sedan: ₹2,600 – ₹3,200 one-way; ₹4,500 – ₹5,500 round trip - Innova/Ertiga: ₹3,500 – ₹4,200 one-way; ₹6,000 – ₹7,200 round trip
Girivalam: What It Is and How It Works
Girivalam (also spelled Giri Valam or Pradakshina) means "circumambulation of the hill." Arunachala Hill is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva himself — not a temple on a hill, but the hill as divinity.
The 14 km path circles the base of the hill and takes 4–5 hours to walk at a moderate pace. The path passes through: - The main Annamalai Temple (starting point) - Eight directional lingam shrines (Ashta Lingams) positioned at compass points - Several smaller temples and Ashrams (Sri Ramana Maharshi's Ramanasramam is on this path) - Adi Annamalai Temple (the original, older temple on the hill's eastern face)
Full Moon Girivalam (Karthigai Deepam Special) While Girivalam is done year-round, the full moon night (Purnima) draws the largest gatherings. The Karthigai Deepam festival (typically November–December) is the most auspicious — a massive beacon flame is lit atop Arunachala and visible for miles.
Girivalam starts: Typically after 6 PM on full moon day, peak activity from 8 PM to 2 AM.
When to Travel from Chennai for Girivalam
Leave Chennai: 2:00 – 3:00 PM on full moon day Arrive Thiruvannamalai: 5:00 – 6:00 PM Park the cab: Your driver finds parking (there are designated areas 1–2 km from the hill base); the cab and driver wait for you Begin Girivalam: 6:00 – 7:00 PM Complete: 11 PM – 1 AM depending on your pace Return drive: Depart 1:00 – 2:00 AM, arrive Chennai by 5:00 AM
Warning about full moon day traffic: The roads into Thiruvannamalai back up significantly from 4 PM onwards. Add 45–60 extra minutes to your estimated journey time.
Annamalai Temple: The Darshan
The Annamalai Temple (officially Annamalaiyar Temple) is one of the five Pancha Bhuta Stalas — temples representing the five elements. Arunachala represents fire (Agni).
Temple hours: 5:30 AM – 12:30 PM, 3:30 PM – 10:00 PM
The temple is massive — one of the largest in Tamil Nadu — with multiple gopurams and a vast complex. Allow 1–2 hours for a proper darshan visit.
Practical Girivalam Tips
- Footwear: The entire 14 km path is walked barefoot (optional for outer sections; mandatory inside shrine compounds). Bring a bag to carry your footwear.
- Clothing: White or light-colored clothing is traditional. Comfortable, loose clothing for 4–5 hours of walking.
- Water and food: Carry 2 litres of water minimum. Small food stalls operate along the path during full moon nights.
- Light: The path is lit but a small torch is useful in darker sections.
- Group travel: Keep your group together. The crowds during full moon can be extremely dense at choke points near the lingam shrines.
The Ashram Side Trip
Ramanasramam — the ashram of Sri Ramana Maharshi — sits directly on the Girivalam path. It is open to visitors and maintains a profound atmosphere of silence. The Maharshi's samadhi (memorial shrine) is inside. Many visitors spend 20–30 minutes here during Girivalam even if they are not followers of his teaching.
