Your First Time in Chennai: A Practical 3-Day Itinerary
Chennai rewards curious visitors with temple architecture, extraordinary food, a genuinely interesting cultural scene, and a coastline that stretches for miles. It also has traffic that requires patience and a city layout that can be confusing without local knowledge.
This itinerary covers three days in Chennai, organized geographically to minimize unnecessary cross-city travel. And because getting around comfortably is half the battle, it includes practical cab tips throughout.
Before You Arrive: The Neighborhoods
Chennai's key areas for visitors:
- Mylapore: The cultural and spiritual heart. Oldest neighborhood in Chennai.
- T. Nagar: Shopping capital. Silk sarees, gold jewelry, everything.
- Marina Beach / Triplicane: The seafront and surrounding heritage district.
- Egmore / Park Town: Hotels, government buildings, museums near Central Station.
- Anna Nagar / Kilpauk: Residential areas popular with business travelers.
- OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road): IT corridor with modern hotels and restaurants.
Day 1: The Heritage and Temple Circuit
Morning (8:00 AM – 1:00 PM)
Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore (1.5 hours) One of Chennai's most magnificent Dravidian temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The 37-meter gopuram is covered in painted sculpture. The tank (pond) in front reflects the tower beautifully in early morning.
Tip: Go before 10 AM to beat crowds and heat. Dress conservatively — no shorts or sleeveless.
San Thome Basilica (30 minutes) Walking distance from Kapaleeshwarar. Built over what is said to be the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. The current neo-Gothic structure dates from 1896. Quiet, cool interior, and an interesting underground museum.
Mylapore neighborhood walk (1 hour) The streets around Kapaleeshwarar are lined with flower stalls, silk saree shops, and filter coffee cafés. R.K. Mutt Road and South Mada Street are where to walk. Stop for a proper filter coffee and idli breakfast at any of the Udupi-style restaurants here.
Afternoon (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM)
Fort St. George and Museum India's first British fort (1644) and the birthplace of British India. The fort museum holds original letters by Robert Clive and the first British-Indian artifacts. Fort St. George still functions as the Tamil Nadu state secretariat.
Government Museum, Egmore (2 hours) One of India's oldest public museums. The Bronze Gallery is exceptional — the best collection of Chola-era bronze sculptures outside a temple setting. The natural history section is also worth an hour.
Evening
Marina Beach (sunset) The world's second longest urban beach — 13 km from Besant Nagar to Foreshore Estate. The stretch near the lighthouse and near Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar is cleaner and more pleasant than the central section.
Dinner: A Chettinad restaurant in Mylapore or a Saravana Bhavan for vegetarian South Indian thali. Both are quintessentially Chennai.
Day 2: Shopping, Food Markets, and the IT Side
Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
T. Nagar (2 hours) Chennai's commercial center. Ranganathan Street is one of India's busiest shopping streets. For silk sarees: Nalli, Kumaran Silks, and Pothys are reliable large retailers. For gold jewelry: Saravana Stores area. For everyday shopping: the crowded street market itself.
T. Nagar traffic note: Never try to drive through Ranganathan Street itself — walk from nearby parking. Your Sigivahan driver will know exactly where to drop and pick you up.
Mahabalipuram option: If you haven't been, Day 2 is a good day for the shore temples (60 km south, easy half-day trip). See separate guide.
Afternoon (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
Lunch at Murugan Idli Shop (T. Nagar or Mylapore branch) — fresh, hot idlis with 8 types of chutney. A Chennai institution.
Broken Down Building / Connemara Library (optional) The Connemara Public Library (near Egmore) is one of the four copyright libraries of India — it holds a copy of every book published in India. A spectacular Victorian building.
DakshinaChitra (optional, 20 km south on ECR) A living museum of South Indian heritage architecture, crafts, and culture. Authentic houses from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have been dismantled and reconstructed here. Worth the ECR drive.
Evening
Besant Nagar / Elliot's Beach A more upmarket beach neighborhood. The beachfront Kalakshetra (arts institute) area has good restaurants and cafés. Popular evening spot for young Chennaites.
Dinner: The seafood restaurants on ECR (Mahabalipuram Road) or in Besant Nagar are excellent.
Day 3: Day Trip or Departure
Option A: Kanchipuram Day Trip (75 km) The silk saree city with 100+ temples. Full-day charter with Sigivahan. See the Kanchipuram guide.
Option B: Mahabalipuram Day Trip (60 km via ECR) UNESCO World Heritage temples, beach, sculpture workshops. See the Mahabalipuram guide.
Option C: Deeper Chennai Exploration
The Mylapore Fish Market (early morning) The wholesale fish market near Kasimedu or the retail market near Mylapore is a sensory overload — overwhelming and fascinating. Best before 8 AM.
Semmozhi Poonga (Botanical Garden) A quiet, green park in the middle of Nungambakkam. Excellent for a morning walk.
Express Avenue / Phoenix Marketcity / VR Mall If you need air-conditioned recovery time, Chennai's malls are large and good.
Getting Around Chennai: Cab Tips
- Chennai auto-rickshaws: Available everywhere but fare negotiation required. Agree on price before boarding.
- Ola/Uber: Work well in Chennai. Surge pricing applies during peak hours.
- Sigivahan chartered cab: For day trips, heritage circuits, or airport transfers. Fixed fare, driver waits for you.
- Never walk long distances in the midday heat: March–June Chennai heat is brutal. Mornings and evenings are manageable.
