Chennai to Tirupati by Cab: The Complete Guide for 2025

Every year, millions of devotees make the journey to Tirumala — the hill-top temple town of Lord Venkateswara, 135 kilometres from Chennai as the crow flies. For many families, this trip is planned months in advance. The darshan is the focus. Everything else — the road, the vehicle, the timing — needs to work quietly in the background.

This guide is written for families and pilgrims who want to plan the taxi journey from Chennai to Tirupati properly, without surprises.

The Route from Chennai to Tirupati

The most common route covers approximately 135–140 km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours under normal conditions:

Chennai → Tambaram → Chengalpattu → Walajapet → Ranipet → Vellore → Renigunta → Tirupati

Key landmarks on this route: - Tambaram: First significant exit from the city. Traffic eases considerably after this point. - Chengalpattu: About 45 km from Chennai. A good place for a quick tea stop on long-distance trips. - Vellore: 140 km into the journey. Famous for CMC Hospital and the Vellore Fort. This is roughly the midpoint. - Renigunta: The town at the base of the Tirumala hills. From here, you head up to Tirupati town or continue to Tirumala.

Alternate route via Tada: Some drivers prefer going through Tada and Sullurpeta, especially if GST Road is heavily congested. This route is slightly longer but can be faster during peak traffic.

What Time Should You Leave Chennai?

Ready to Book Your Trip?

Sigivahan offers 24/7 service with experienced drivers across Tamil Nadu.

Timing your departure matters — for traffic in Chennai, for reaching Tirupati at a useful hour, and for managing darshan queue times.

Option 1: Leave Chennai at 4:00 – 5:00 AM - Beat the morning city traffic entirely - Arrive in Tirupati by 7:30 – 8:30 AM - Suitable for early morning darshan slots (typically 6 AM – 9 AM)

Option 2: Leave at 8:00 – 9:00 AM (after rush hour) - Roads are manageable - Arrive by noon – 1:00 PM - Works well if you have midday or afternoon darshan slot

Avoid These Departure Times - Weekday 7 AM – 10 AM: Chennai city traffic is brutal - Friday evenings: Heavy traffic + many pilgrims make the journey simultaneously - Festival periods (Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi): Book weeks in advance; expect queues at Tirupati

Darshan: What You Need to Arrange Before You Go

The cab gets you there — the darshan requires separate planning.

Types of Darshan 1. Free darshan (Sarva Darshanam): No ticket needed, but queue times can stretch 8–14 hours, especially on weekends. 2. ₹300 Special Entry Darshan (SRIVANI): Online pre-booking required at tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in. Quota limited per day; books fast. 3. TTD Seva tickets: Various paid sevas (Suprabhatam, Archana, etc.) can be booked online. Come with a darshan component.

Our strong recommendation: Book your darshan ticket before you book your cab. The ticket determines your timing; your cab timing follows from that.

Accommodation at Tirupati TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) operates guest houses in both Tirupati town and up on Tirumala hill. Book early via the TTD website. Private hotels are available in Tirupati town.

The Hill Road to Tirumala

From Tirupati town, Tirumala (the hilltop where the temple is) is about 18 km up a ghat road with 9 hairpin bends. Your cab can drive you up — this is allowed during non-peak hours. During heavy festival traffic, the TTD operates free buses from Alipiri and Tirumala Srivari Mettu (pedestrian path entry point).

Ghat road tips: - The road has separate ascent and descent lanes - No overtaking on hairpin bends — a rule your driver will follow - Keep windows up and AC running in the vehicle through the hill section - The descent in the evening can get foggy; allow extra time

What to Pack for the Trip

  • Clothing: Full-sleeved, conservative clothes required inside the temple. No shorts, no sleeveless. Traditional attire recommended.
  • Laddu receipt: If you want the famous Tirupati laddu, you'll collect it from a distribution counter with your darshan ticket.
  • Small bag only: Large bags and luggage are not allowed inside the temple complex. There are cloakroom facilities outside.
  • Phone charger: The temple queues can be long. Keep your device charged.
  • Light snacks and water: Especially if you have children or elderly family members.

Traveling with Senior Family Members or Children

This is where a private cab significantly outperforms any other mode of transport. Your car waits for you at every stop. Elderly family members can rest in the vehicle while others complete procedures. Children can nap during the journey. You set the schedule.

For senior travelers, book an Innova or Ertiga — the higher seating position is much easier to get in and out of compared to a sedan, especially after hours of walking around the temple.

Why Cab Over Train for Tirupati

The Chennai – Tirupati rail route is an option (about 3 hours on some trains), but: - Train timings don't always align with your darshan slot - Reaching Tirumala requires another vehicle from Tirupati railway station - Luggage, elderly travelers, and groups are more comfortable in a private cab - The cab can stop anywhere — at a temple along the route, for a meal, or if someone needs a break
